I got a note from one reader very rightly pointing out that I've conflated "graphic facilitation" and "graphic recording" in this post, and he was spot-on. I think that might be a reflection of my own bias in where my practice has taken me, but it is very much worth noting the difference:

- Graphic Facilitation involves active engagement of the facilitator in using visuals to guide a conversation and process, in addition to capturing artefacts along the way.

- Graphic Recording involves the scribe capturing the outputs of a conversation as it unfolds, without intervening in the process.

This could really be its own post, and probably should be. I think the reason at this point that this distinction isn't as important to me as it used to be is that I generally see visual sensemaking as facilitation no matter how I integrate it into a process, and I am used to working in teams where we manage the process and the capture across multiple people. I generally don't participate in processes where scribing is primarily passive recording, but I realize that is actually not the case for a HUGE proportion of those in the practice.

So, in the spirit of this being a "Starter Pack", duly noted: there is a very big difference between the two terms I used semi-interchangeably above!
